Needs vs Wants

With the Bruins sitting almost dead last in the league after 1/10th of the season gone, what is going to fix there scenario? The players want it to stay the same and they will work out of it. The media as well as us fans are speculating on trades.
What do you think needs to be done?

  1. My top three ideas:
    1. Fire Geoff Ward (PP has sucked balls for how long now? No Seguin on a 5on3 last game?!)
    2. Trade for a veteran leader like Whitney to replace Recchi (pretty obvious that Rex is missed)
    3. Upgrade on D (the mobility isn’t there, Corvo isn’t the answer and this team is playing with 4 Dmen that are 5/6 dmen)

Just my thoughts….I thought they needed an offence upgrade but the talent is there. I think the forwards need to get there heads out of there asses, play disciplined and get some help from the dmen. Did I mention fire Ward?

    • Definitely agree on the first two. I’ve been saying Whitney for a while, but Ward… good lord, how much longer can he last? We’ve tried absolutely every player there, so it’s time to start looking at who runs the thing.

I’m ok with the D right now. I’d never say no to an upgrade, but I don’t think it’s a real issue. I do think they need some more depth though, because there’s nothing after Kampfer.

  2. I agree with your comments Moast for the most part. Ward going may in fact ignite the fire within the pp. God knows it has been smouldering forever to the point now that it would be better if we could decline the man advantage and play 5 on 5. That speaks volumes to letting Ward go.

Whitney is a viable option as is Rene Bourque. Personally, I am fed up with the Bruins play this year & the addition of those two would send a definite message by management that despite the love they have for those who won the Cup, this is still a business and no one’s job is secure until and at least until you contribute.

This is week of reckoning for the Bruins & I am hopeful that PC and Neely will be proactive sooner rather than later if the Bruins falter once again this week. Procrastinating will only cause the problem to fester and continue.

Having said that, what do the Bruins have to offer in return to acquire both Whitney & Bourque. Perhaps a pick and/or prospects may be answer for Whitney, but it may take a roster player and picks/prospect to acquire Bourque.

Rumor has it that Boychuk may be the bait as he is from Alberta and Calgary loves its hometown boys, i.e., Bouwmeester. I hope not – although his play is not up to par this year, I would rather lose Corvo than Boychuk. As regards the forwards, Pouliot is a bust and Paille is back to his pathetic figure skating self, has more opportunities than anyone else and still manages to find a way to disappoint. Caron has not looked especially good, however he is young and needs time to mature & learn as was the case for Seguin last year. Surely there has to be someone in the minors to replace those 2 clowns.

The week of reckoning starts tomorrow and in my books, a .500 record this week, although an improvement, will not suffice. 80% or more of the playoff bound teams are in a playoff spot by Thanksgiving and that time is rapidly approaching. It the Bruins are not in a playoff position by that time, they will be chasing all year with only a 20% chance of making it.

    • Good insight but contrary to what we are hoping, I keep reading is that they are going to try and figure it out internally….meaning same old same old. Could be a long and painful year if they have to continue to try and motivate adult millionaires playing hockey for a living. I can’t emphasize any more, the importance off letting Ward go. It shows that they are serious, may light a fire and bottom line, the PP can’t get any worse with him gone.

      • Logically speaking, you are absolutely right Moast. The PP has been down for ages and maybe its time to replace the guy running it. But to be devils ad, let me make 2 points; 1 valid and 1 invalid
Valid: actually, the PP has been down since……Savvy went down.
Invalid: Copycatting the Habs just rubs me the wrong way. We are the standard bearers until someone else lifts the cup, teams should emulate US.
Best case scenario: Seguin becomes that PP playmaking force on the half-wall that Savvy was and the Bruins as a team decides that even though they got big shots at the point it doesn’t they have to force funnel everything there.

  3. Bruins better fucken win tonight. Haus ten fucken years later, unacceptable. Good to hear from your loud mouth again. GOOOOOOO BSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • LC: I would have been more than pleased to come on this site and call you a prick every day since the season started but this website is blocked due to censorship in the country I was in (probably because of your filthy language). Anyways, I’m happy as fuck to be talking B’s with you all again. Thanks for the welcome back LC. I’m home now, time to turn this fucking ship around tonight buddy!!!!!

  4. Tonight is the night…..weird that i keep saying that! Ottawa is a hot team right now so the B’s better pull there heads out of there asses and destroy!

  5. The Bruins need to trade Geoff Ward for whoever is the black magician behind the Ottawa Senators Powerplay. (Excuse me for not knowing his name apparently he has conjured some sort of spell over the league and everyone associated with it including fans.)

I like the idea of the guy, but you can’t rely on JUST Joe Corvo to repair the Bruins Powerplay woes. We need to get Kampfer back in the lineup, and I know this is going to catch me heat, but Kampfer and Chara on the points for our Powerplay was pretty solid and at least producing shots on net during our stretch run last season. Put the two together, sit Corvo or McQuaid. Maybe even throw Boychuk’s name in that mix as well since his play hasn’t been as consistent as it was last year. Rotate through and give everyone a seat in the press box from time to time and it will reward this team. Don’t forget we had a very short off season so everyone’s going to be getting tired and worn down much easier than usual. (Not that I’d trade our m***erf***ing 2011 Stanley Cup Banner, Rings, Title for anything in this world or the next)

Julien needs to get the Chemistry going on these lines again. I don’t think a coaching change is in order at all, but definitely at least tinkering with the lines a little more drastically would benefit everyone. I’m thinking:

    Lucic-Bergeron-Horton
    Marchand-Krejci-Seguin
    Kelly-Peverley-Caron
    Thornton-Campbell-Paille

    Chara-Kampfer
    Seidenberg-McQuaid
    Boychuk-Ference

And split the season down the middle with Rask and Thomas. Go with the Moog/Lemelin guidelines there.

(I’m 100% sure I’m going to hear how much of an idiot I sound like with this lineup, but f*ck it. We NEED to do something.)

    • They only thing I’d add is somehow get Seguin and Looch together. Besides Kelly missing the net most of the time, Looch, Seguin, and Kelly did pretty well together…

      • To be honest Richardo, I haven’t been able to watch a lot of the games because my Rugby team is making a push for Nationals and we have practices on most game nights and I work from 4am-4pm M-F so staying up late (I feel old saying that 9:30pm is “late”) so I haven’t seen complete games of late unfortunately. So the Lucic-Seguin-Kelly line I must’ve missed. Interesting line to be fair.

  6. The time for excuses is over beginning tonight.

The Bruins went 2 and 3 in their first 5 and 1 and 4 in their last 5. IMO, the Bruins have to go AT LEAST 3 and 2 in their next 5 starting tonight. They must start building something productive!! Anything either than 2 points tonight is completely unacceptable and not an option.

Over the next 5 games they have Ottawa, Toronto, Islanders, Edmonton & Buffalo. Tonight however is the Bruins litmus test. The Sens are playing exceptionally well but giving up a lot of goals. They are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights and are ripe for the picking.

Another lacklustre uninspired effort tonight will tell the tale and put us that much deeper in the hole. 96 points is what is usually required to qualify for the playoffs and another loss tonight would mean that the Bruins would have to go 45-26 over their 71 games. That’s a tall task to play 19 games over .500 when you are only 5 below .500 after 11 games.

I know it’s still early, but we cannot and should not continue to use that excuse as a crutch or we will be chasing all year. It’s not that the Bruins cannot do it – it’s all about doing it now and putting forth a full 60 minute effort by ALL.

The Bruins real regular season MUST begin tonight with a win!!

  7. Everyone on here has valid points, awesome observations and a love for the Bruins. I have learnt alot from you all and I am now changing my stance on what needs to happen with this team. Keep everything the same but FIRE GEOFF WARD and get someone in to get the PP working. If this team has what it takes to make the playoffs, which it does!, the climb out of the whole will be a bunch easier if they can score a PP goal when needed. This is the biggest problem I have with this team is the PP. They are shooting a lot, great Penalty kill and the talent to make it happen.
Mark my words, the team will turn around and be dominate again only if two things happen:
    1. Fire Ward
    2. Bring in a veteran like Whitney.

    • There is standing pat and being patient and then there is a head in the sand technique that they have been useing for three years with this embarrasing PP.

  8. If this doesn’t work, please don’t kill me, but i am all for trading a big name (Krejci/Rask)for a (St.Louis/Spezza).
Sorry but if this team continues to falter, they will need a proven finisher.

  9. PP and defense…..HORIBLE!
So, they know that they need a PMD and to be able to score on the PP for years now and there answers are Corvo and Pouliot……hand to the fucking face!

  10. Enuff of the bullshit pretty plays.

Get back to basics and play hard in your face, crash the net, smash mouth BRUINS hockey. The fans will love you for it, even if you do lose.

Stop feeling sorry for yourselves and just do it for a change.

  11. Listening to the radio today they were talking about the Big Bad Bruins and how they are losing fans this year. All I had to say was bandwagon fans. I know they are playing horrible this year but I still stick with the Black and Gold.

With that being said I just turned on the game. I take it from some of the comments above not too good.

    • We’ve stuck through some pretty bad times over the years and this isn’t one of them……I’d be more worried if we didn’t have the management that they have.

  12. Gawd awful!!! It’s like the Bruins are in some kind of Red Sox time warp of some sorts. Purely Buckneresque at time and certainly keystone kops most of the time.

It’s like the Bruins are Rocky and just waiting for Adrian to say ‘win’ or ‘knock his block off’.

Hey Adrian …….wanna call the Bruins to wake them up? I’ll even throw in the quarter.

  13. I am just gonna say that in my opinion the bruins are a good fucking team. For whatever reason things are just looking grim at times. In my opinion the changes which need to happen are Ward, Pouliot and Corvo. We need someone other than Corvo and someone other than Caron/Pouliot to play with Kelly and Pevs. The bruins are good boys. Its hard to watch but I dont think we need a whole lot to change.

    • They are the same team just working out some shit. Seems like Krejci and Horton are fragile out there. WTF is Corvo all about?
Needed someone better than him and yes Kabs would look a lot better out there.

  14. Seemed like a solid 60 with tonnes of shots! Hopefully they can build on this. Did I mention fire Ward? Is still think there are holes to be addressed as these are the guys with chemistry
    Lucic Seguin
    Marchand Bergeron
    Peverley Kelly
    Merlot
Not sure about the rest….I get what Krejci did in the playoffs and what he can do…..its the how often and when will he do it again that I don’t like. Horton looks uninspired and angry but not in the good angry that sparks teams, the bad angry that takes stupid penalties.

As far as the defence is concerned, this is who I like:
    Chara Seidenberg
    ? ?
    Boychuk McQuaid/Kampfer
The Corvos, Widemans, Kaberles just don’t fit the mould and may work great on other teams but the Bruins need a top 2 dman to solidify there defence first game.

This is a team that will go deep in the playoffs if they make and I feel like they can with a couple of tweaks. Start with FIRING WARD!!

  15. Montreal fired thier assistant so now we have to? I dont think they deserved a couple of those losses. But it happened. October is over. Need a great November record. That is all.

    • No, not because Montreal did it, because the Bruins need to. The PP is disastrous and has been for a long time. Can’t even call it a panic move as it should have been done earlier last year.

  16. That game could have been 10-3, not to mention all of Ottawa’s goals were favourable bounces. We’re really not getting the bounces this year.

I can’t believe how quickly Seguin has turned into our best offensive player, and he’s contributing defensively too.

  17. I am always reading, but rarely post.

We need a d-man with puck moving ability, I’d love for us to go for a guy like Keith Yandle, but there is no way that Phoenix are going to give him up, neither will they give up Ray Whitney at this point in the season. Why don’t the B’s go for a player like Shea Weber. It isn’t completely unreasonable, it was quite publicized his problems with contract negotiations with the Preds this summer. Will the situation in Nashville improve when it comes time to sign Weber to another contract?

    Maybe look something like

    To Nashville:
    Boychuk & Prospect/Pick

    To Boston:
    Weber

I think our defense would then be sick, and if Weber can contribute the way he does on a team like the Preds, imagine what he can do with the B’s…

    • As much as I’d love to see Weber in a B’s jersey, you’d be looking at starting with:
Krejci, Hamilton, Picks to get it done. Weber is a top 5 guy in the league and won’t be had for a Boychuk

      • Seconded.

Maybe not Hamilton as well, probably a Cohen or some prospect coming through. I doubt the Preds are going to trade their Captain right now anyway. If he moves it’ll be around the deadline or when his contract is up.

If we go for a puck moving D-man I still say we seek out a guy like Seabrook or maybe a Keith from Chicago, more likely to get Seabrook than Keith, but both would compliment the blue-line very well and have a grit to their game that would look good in a Bruins jersey. That kind of trade helps the B’s and the Blackhawks in the short and long term. As it would likely be Boychuk/McQuaid/Corvo being sent out there with some picks, which would relieve their Cap issues for now and massage our blueline woes a bit. (Yes I believe we have some “woes” although they’re good problems to have. We have too many good defensemen right now, it discourages guys like Kampfer and Bartkowski because they see guys that are definitely top 6 D-men ahead of them which means no game-time for them) I vote send Boychuk, Corvo, and a pick/picks to Chicago for Seabrook and maybe a mid-round pick. Both teams get solid names, we alleviate some of the log jam on our point but still have guys in case of injury. Chicago loses a big long term contract and gains two solid D-men and some picks to use to rebuild and compete again. (Again, probably going to catch shit for this idea)
